McDonalds, serial killers, and not adulting
May 04, 2020
It all started with a lie I kept telling myself. Okay, that sounds really dramatic but honestly, it’s true. I had binge watched Mindhunter Season 2 for the second time and hit up the McDonalds drive-thru multiple times in one week. Nothing against those things but I know I don’t feel my best when I have mystery meat gurgling in my stomach and my body hurts from sitting on the couch in the same position all day. Anyways, I kept justifying my behavior because I was always “tired.” And I believed that to be true.
I’m not saying I was depressed, hibernating in my bed for weeks on end. But my usual inquisitive, self growth mindset was stunted. Maybe I had started my business at a sprint when I should have been at a steady jog. Or maybe I was just working too much. Regardless of what got me there, I knew I needed to make some changes if I wanted to get “unstuck.”
And that’s when I had the realization that my personal pity party wasn’t reserved for just me. Lots of other people feel the same way, some don’t even know it yet. So here’s to those people. Buckle up, because stuff’s about to get pretty real.
-
Fuel your body: Step one of this is to get educated. You should probably be drinking more water and eating more whole foods (fruits, veggies, protein source). Also, if you’re not stocking up your fridge with healthy, TASTY, choices you’re setting yourself up to fail. Hangry you is going to come home and grab that artificial chicken flavored top ramen and probably regret it later. Future you will thank you for having good food easily accessible.
-
Move your body: Everyone’s starting point is going to be different but get real with yourself and move your body. For me? I love the gym. I love blasting hard core rap and lifting heavy sh** that weighs more than I do. I love when gym bros compliment me on my form and friends ask for help meeting their goals. But I know that’s not for everyone. Find something that challenges you but also brings you joy.

Write it down: 2 things on this. 1. I write in my “Start Today” journal every morning. Okay some mornings I don’t get to it (hey, I’m a work in progress) but I make sure to carve out time for myself at some point in the day. It’s helped me gain clarity on my goals and also appreciate the good things happening in my life. 2. I write down my workouts. This allows me to see when I’ve been able to achieve my goals and how I feel after certain foods.

Get uncomfortable: Once you start making these changes to your life, other things are going to become less important. If you’re wanting growth in life, it’s going to take sacrifice. Period. And something else to think about? People you currently associate with might not be on the same journey as you. And that’s okay! So find others that are leveling up to motivate you and encourage you along the way.
The biggest takeaway here is: what got me here won’t get me there. And the more I create sustainable habits, then when I am in those seasons of “blah,” my habits will get me through. Every day is not perfect, I am not perfect. But I am committed to feeling my best and continuing to level up in all aspects of life. So are you getting on this bus, or what?! Let’s do this!
Cheers,
Kelsey
