How to take action on your 2021 goals

So you’ve spent the last few weeks pouring over the last year. Maybe you created a vision board or picked out a “word” for the year. You bought a new journal, running shoes, and a fancy new water bottle with a crystal in it. But here’s the big question… now what?

How do you go from all of these great intentions to actually taking sustainable action? What happens when you have an off day? What happens when you want to change your goals completely? Today, we’re going to have that conversation. The real one about how to actually live your new goals out loud. How to know when to make changes and how to know when to get back on the horse.

First off let’s talk about action. My advice on this one? Start small. If your goal is to run a mile and you haven’t run since junior high… start with walking the distance. Build up to run/walking and eventually jogging the whole mile. If your goal is to launch your business, start with a social media account to gain awareness and get in the habit of showing up. Or get a blog up and running so you can practice sharing your expertise. Take a baby step of putting yourself out there before jumping into a full blown business (taxes and all). The LLC’s, business checking account, and website can come later. Start small and start with free!

As you get going, you also have to decide what success means for you. Is it hitting 10,000 steps a day or drinking your body weight in water? Is it totally unplugging on Sundays or taking a booze break until February? You’re the boss here, decide what it means to cross the finish line. Then you’ll know when to celebrate your victory and when you’ve actually achieved your goal.

And that last little nugget I have for you is arguably the most important one. Give yourself permission to pivot. If you’ve been around here for a while, you know I love a good pivot (like when I closed my Seattle hair salon to go full time into business coaching). The point here is sometimes we set out with big goals and come to realize that they no longer serve us. Do a little gut check. Are you avoiding making progress on this goal because it’s scary or because it isn’t what you truly want. If it’s #2, don’t force it into practice. Take a moment to recalibrate your goals and then move forward.

Remember, as all of the fancy New Years resolutions start to come to light, I challenge you to be intentional on how you’ll practice these new goals. Start with small steps, determine what it means to complete your goal, and give yourself some liberty to make adjustments as needed. Afterall YOU are the boss of all of this. This is your permission slip to continue to grow and evolve while still staying true to who you are. Remember real success comes from achieving your goals, not that of others. Cheers to YOUR success this month, this year, and the many more to come!
